Whole30 Day 21 + Thoughts on What Food Really Means

9:30 am Faux oatmeal
12:00pm Lunch with friends. Mahi mahi, salad with avocado, strawberries, watermelon and sautéed zucchini

5:00pm Post-workout RxBar

7:30pm Leftover pork tenderloin and cauliflower rice
I wasn't able to take communion today. That really hurt. Much like yesterday, I'm still feeling the hate towards food. I was totally uninspired while making this weeks meal plan. I was pissed I couldn't take communion.

The Whole30 talks a lot about how food is fuel, but I'm learning that it is so much more than fuel. Food is sacred and a sacred way that we share community. So far the Whole30 has limited my ability to be in community with people and to break bread (literally). One of my favorite books is Bread and Wine: A Love Letter to Life Around the Table by Shauna Niequist. I've found myself returning to this book often and reading how gloriously she writes about food to remember that there is something to like about food and to not think that its the enemy. She writes "Food is the starting point, the common ground, the thing to hold and handle, the currency we offer to one another." It's more than just fuel for our bodies, its fuel for our souls.

She also writes about feasting and fasting. I just have to remember that this is a time of fasting for me. Fasting from the foods I love and learning to appreciate the less less less minimalism. That being said, I have 9 Days left of Whole30 and then a 10 day reintroduction period. I'm counting down the days until I can really savor, share and enjoy food again.
