Twenty Four-ward

Turning 24

I'll be celebrating my birthday this weekend in one of my favorite places on earth — Hilton Head Island. My parents bought a timeshare there when they got married so we've gone almost every summer that I can remember. I used to think that every kid got to go on a vacation on their birthday, but I just ended up being born that same week.

I saw my parents in May at a friend's wedding, but I haven't seen my sister since February so I'm very excited to be reunited. The next time we'll all be together is Christmas! One of the major drawbacks to living on the other side of the country.

I was wary of turning 23 and it ended up being for good reason. It did end up being a huge transitional year. The first half was spent in the Chicago tundra, 2,000 mi long distance from my boyfriend and in a job that I didn't love. I was commuting 1.5 hours each way, had to buy a coat that went to my ankles and didn't put on mascara until I got to work because my eyelashes would freeze and then melt in the Chicago wind. I lost my childhood cat. But it wasn't all bad, I really enjoyed the time I got to have with my family, especially while I was so far away from Matt. I got to visit Colorado for Christmas and spent New Years with my college friends.

I took two great trips out to northern California before I knew I was going to be living here. Matt and I spent some time in Sonoma and then Marin which is what helped me decide where I was going to end up. I made the drive out to California just after the halfway point of 23 and then started at a job that challenges me and I'm super passionate about. I've had to learn to live on my own and rely on myself. I've also had to put myself out there and thankfully I've made some good friends so far.

It didn't start out easy and I know its not guaranteed to be easy, but its definitely looking up and I'm excited to see where 24 takes me.

Cheers to twenty-four.
